Festival Season: Is Your Body Ready?
Festival season is here, which means music, friends, dancing, questionable food choices, and pretending that sleeping in a tent is comfortable.
It is all fun and games until you get home and realise your body feels less “weekend of memories” and more “I have completed an endurance event with glitter on my face.”
Between standing for hours, dancing into the night, walking across uneven fields, carrying heavy bags, and sleeping on the floor, your body goes through a lot over a festival weekend. As a chiropractor, I often see people afterwards with sore backs, stiff necks, aching hips, tired feet and the general feeling of “why do I hurt everywhere?”
The good news is that a few simple things can help you enjoy the festival without your body filing a formal complaint afterwards.
Before You Go
A little preparation goes a long way. Nobody wants to be the person limping back to the tent before the headline act has even started.
Wear supportive footwear, ideally something you have already worn in. Brand new shoes at a festival are brave. Not always wise, but certainly brave.
Pack as lightly as you can and share the load where possible. Carrying half your house on your back across a field is not ideal for your shoulders, neck or lower back.
It is also worth doing a few gentle stretches before a long day on your feet. You do not need to do a full workout next to your tent, unless that is your thing. A few simple movements for your calves, hips, back and shoulders can help prepare your body for the day ahead.
During the Festival
A festival weekend can easily mean 20,000 plus steps a day, hours of standing, dancing, walking, and probably a fair bit of sitting on the floor too. Your body needs a bit of kindness in between the fun.
Try to:
- Stay hydrated, especially if it is hot or you are dancing a lot
- Take breaks when you need them
- Change position regularly
- Stretch gently at the end of the day
- Avoid carrying heavy bags on one shoulder for too long
And yes, sitting down for a rest is allowed. It does not mean you are old. It means you are sensible. Mostly.
After You Get Home
Once the music stops and real life returns, your body may need a little recovery time. The temptation is to collapse on the sofa and not move for a day, but too much sitting can actually make stiff muscles and joints feel tighter.
A gentle walk, some light stretching, plenty of water and a good night’s sleep can all help your body recover. Sleep is when your body does most of its repair work, so do not underestimate it.
If you are stiff for a day or two, that can be normal. If aches and pains do not settle after a few days, or you feel something is not quite right, it is worth getting checked.
How Chiropractic Can Help
Festivals are meant to leave you with amazing memories, not lingering back, neck or hip pain.
If you have come home feeling sore, stiff or like you have aged 40 years in one weekend, chiropractic care may be able to help. A chiropractic assessment can look at how your joints and muscles are moving, identify what might be causing the discomfort, and help get you moving comfortably again.
So, enjoy the music, dance like nobody is watching, and let your body enjoy the memories too.
If your body is still feeling the effects long after the music has stopped, get in touch and book a check-in. We are always happy to help you feel more like yourself again.
