Strong Bones, Happy Spines: Looking After Your Body for the Long Haul

October gave us two important awareness days: World Spine Day on 16 October and World Osteoporosis Day on 20 October.

Both are great reminders that looking after our bodies isn’t just about dealing with aches and pains when they appear. It’s also about keeping ourselves strong, mobile and doing the things we love for as long as possible.

After all, our bones and spines do a pretty important job, and we don’t always give them the credit they deserve!

World Spine Day: Give Your Back a Little Love

Your spine supports you through pretty much everything you do. Sitting, standing, walking, lifting, gardening and even those questionable sleeping positions we somehow find comfortable.

But how often do we really think about looking after it?

World Spine Day encourages us to take better care of our spinal health through movement, good habits and recognising when something isn’t quite right.

A few simple things can make a difference:

  • Keep moving. Your spine generally prefers regular movement to being stuck in one position for hours.
  • Change your position. Whether you’re working at a desk or relaxing on the sofa, give your body a chance to move.
  • Lift sensibly. Keep loads close to your body, bend through your hips and knees, and avoid twisting while carrying something heavy.
  • Build strength. Regular exercise helps support your muscles, joints and spine.
  • Listen to your body. If discomfort keeps returning, don’t just put up with it.

And remember, there’s no such thing as maintaining perfect posture all day. Even the best sitting position becomes uncomfortable if you stay there long enough!

World Osteoporosis Day: Don’t Forget Your Bones

While World Spine Day focuses on spinal health, World Osteoporosis Day reminds us about the importance of bone strength.

Osteoporosis is a condition where bones become weaker and more likely to fracture. It’s often called a silent condition because many people don’t realise they have it until a fracture occurs.

It becomes more common as we get older, particularly in women following menopause, although men can develop it too.

The good news is that there are things we can do to support our bone health throughout life.

  • Stay active. Walking, dancing and other suitable weight-bearing activities help maintain bone strength.
  • Include strength exercises. Keeping muscles strong also supports balance and mobility.
  • Eat well. Calcium, vitamin D and adequate protein all play important roles in bone health.
  • Work on your balance. Reducing the risk of falls becomes increasingly important as we age.
  • Know your risks. If you’re concerned about osteoporosis, speak to your GP about whether an assessment would be appropriate.

It’s never too early to start looking after your bones, and it’s certainly never too late!

Where Does Chiropractic Fit In?

Chiropractic care isn’t just about the occasional stiff neck or aching back.

At 360 Chiropractic, I look at how your body is moving, where you may be experiencing discomfort and what we can do to support your mobility and everyday function.

For people with osteoporosis, chiropractic care needs to be carefully adapted to their individual circumstances. It doesn’t treat osteoporosis itself, but appropriate gentle care and movement advice may help with certain musculoskeletal symptoms.

And you don’t necessarily have to wait until something hurts before thinking about your spinal health.

A Little Care Goes a Long Way

Whether you’re 25 or 75, looking after your bones, joints and spine is an investment in your future.

You don’t need to overhaul your entire lifestyle overnight. A daily walk, a few strength exercises, regular movement breaks and being a little more mindful of how you use your body are all good places to start.

If you’ve been feeling a little stiff, have a recurring niggle or simply haven’t had a check-up for a while, feel free to get in touch.

And if it’s been ages since your last appointment, don’t worry. No telling off, I promise!

Let’s keep you moving comfortably and enjoying life for years to come.
